EN | WORM is celebrating its 25th anniversary in September. For that reason the team of CINEMA COLOMBIANO decided to organize something special for the opening day of our festival. Aside from the indoor film program, there's going to be a Colombian block party outside on the Boomgaardsstraat, with right next to the entrance of WORM a 3 meter-high picó! A picó is a typical sound system from the north coast of Colombia, and we are honoured to invite El Mágic Baobab - the only Dutch picó - to join in the festivities. Inbetween and after the films, you'll be able to enjoy cumbia, champeta, salsa and other music genres inherent to Colombian culture.

After years of research and building connections, El Mágico Baobab began to take shape towards the end of 2022. Picó sound systems can be experienced in Caribbean coastal cities such as Barranquilla, Cartagena, and Santa Marta. These picó sound systems bring vibrancy to the streets and contribute to the rich culture of these cities. The hand-painted fluorescent designs on these massive sound systems are unique to this region. The makers of the only Dutch picó have worked together with renowned artist William Guitterez Peñaloza, bringing his original artwork from Barranquilla to the Netherlands!

ES | WORM celebra su 25 aniversario en septiembre. Por eso, el equipo de CINEMA COLOMBIANO decidió organizar algo especial para el día de apertura de nuestro festival. Además del programa de películas, habrá una fiesta callejera colombiana en la Boomgaardsstraat, con un picó de 3 metros de altura justo al lado de la entrada de WORM!. Un picó es un sistema de sonido típico de la costa norte de Colombia y tenemos el honor de invitar a El Mágico Baobab - el único picó holandés - a unirse a las festividades. En intermedio y después de las películas, podrás disfrutar de cumbia, champeta, salsa y otros géneros musicales de la cultura picotera.

Después de años de investigación y establecer conexiones, El Mágico Baobab comenzó a tomar forma hacia finales de 2022. Este fenomenal sistema de sonido picó se puede escuchar en ciudades costeras del Caribe colombiano como Barranquilla, Cartagena y Santa Marta. Los Picó aportan energía a las calles y son parte de la riqueza cultural de estas ciudades. Los diseños fluorescentes pintados a mano en esos enormes sistemas de sonido son únicos de la región caribe. ¡Los creadores de este único picó holandés han trabajado junto con el reconocido artista William Gutierrez Peñaloza, trayendo su obra de arte original de Barranquilla a los Países Bajos!

EN | A funeral car cruises the streets of Medellín, while a young director tells the story of his past in this violent and conservative city. He remembers the pre-production of his first film, a B-Movie with ghosts. The young queer scene of Medellín is casted for the film, but the main protagonist dies of a heroin overdose at the age of 21, just like many friends of the director. Anhell69 explores the dreams, doubts and fears of an annihilated generation, and the struggle to carry on making cinema.

Theo Montoya: "To go through my life, is to talk about war, religion, cinema, and about when I met Camilo Najar, Sharlott, MH, Alejandro Paz, Julian David, Mendigana and Juan Perez. To talk about them is to evoke the film we could never make together Anhell69, the annihilation and the “Non-Future” of my generation, caused by suicide and drugs, and also by the oppression of a conservative and violent society, which tries to exterminate anything that would challenge the status quo. We are finally making Anhell69, not how we first imagined, but in the manner life is allowing us to do it, me and my remaining friends, the protagonists of the film. Anhell69 is the immortalization of our recollections, our memory, our life before death, and maybe a warning for the generations and governments to follow."

ES | Un coche fúnebre recorre las calles de Medellín mientras un joven director narra su pasado en esa ciudad violenta y conservadora. Recuerdos de la preproducción de su primera película, una serie B con fantasmas. La escena queer juvenil de Medellín es seleccionada para el filme, pero el protagonista principal muere de una sobredosis de heroína a los 21 años, al igual que muchos amigos del director. Anhell69 explora los sueños, dudas y miedos de una generación aniquilada, y la lucha por seguir haciendo cine.

Theo Montoya director de la película menciona: "Recorrer mi vida, es hablar de guerra, de religión, de cine, y de cuando conocí a Camilo Najar, Sharlott, MH, Alejandro Paz, Julián David, Mendigana y Juan Pérez. Hablar de ellos es evocar la película que nunca pudimos hacer juntos Anhell69, la aniquilación y el “No Futuro” de mi generación, causado por el suicidio y las drogas, y también por la opresión de una sociedad conservadora y violenta, que intenta exterminar todo lo que desafíe el status quo. Finalmente estamos haciendo Anhell69, no como imaginamos al principio, sino de la manera que la vida nos está permitiendo hacerlo, a mí y a mis amigos restantes, los protagonistas de la película. Anhell69 es la inmortalización de nuestros recuerdos, nuestra memoria, nuestra vida antes de la muerte, y tal vez una advertencia para las generaciones y los gobiernos que vendrán."

Jorge Aldana, 1983 (56')

EN | A longlost cult classic taking place in Bogotá in the 80s has finally been found and remastered! "Guillo” and “El Cucho”, two young men from downtown Bogotá, roam the streets of the city day and night. Along the way, they meet friends on street corners, are harassed by police violence, attend rock concerts and consume all kinds of psychoactive substances. These Pepos have various surreal and delirious encounters that will gradually build a distorted reality that wanders between fantasy, urban squalor, rock, comedy and the absurd.

Pepos is a vivid psychedelic portrait of the spirit of a generation that remembers the hopes, frustrations and chaos of a youth who grew up in a country that was going through the boom of drug trafficking and was going through one of its worst periods of violence and state corruption. The film still beats with the same force and rebellion with which it was conceived, as an avant-garde document both in its form and its subject matter. Pepos has an incalculable historical and cinematic value for the turbulent and dehumanized history of Colombia and Latin America in the last decades of the 20th century.

ES | Por fin se ha encontrado y remasterizado un clásico de culto perdido que se desarrolla en Bogotá en los años 80! “Guillo” y “El Cucho”, dos jóvenes del centro de Bogotá recorren las calles de la ciudad día y noche. A su paso se encuentran con amigos en las esquinas de las calles, son abusados por la violencia policial, visitan conciertos de rock y consumen todo tipo de psicoactivos. Estos Pepos tienen diversos encuentros surreales y delirantes que irán poco a poco construyendo una realidad distorsionada que se pasea entre la fantasía, la sordidez urbana, el rock, lo cómico y el absurdo.

Pepos es un vivo retrato psicodélico del espíritu de una generación que da cuenta de las esperanzas, las frustraciones y el caos de una juventud que creció en un país que atravesaba el boom del narcotráfico y pasaba por una de sus peores épocas de violencia y corrupción de estado. La película late aún con la misma fuerza y rebeldía con la que fue creada como un documento vanguardista tanto en su forma como en su temática. Pepos tiene un valor incalculable tanto histórico como cinematográfico para la turbulenta y deshumanizada historia de Colombia y América Latina en las últimas décadas del siglo XX.

EN | This filmic and musical project was created and recorded by Stephanie Ascanio G. (filmmaker and director) and Iván Medellín (music composer and producer) at various locations in Rotterdam, Netherlands during May and June 2023 and furtherly developed and produced in Bogotá, Colombia.

The Clan of the Rotte River is composed of five short films that portray different themes revolving around the city: rhythm, shapes, change, people and last but not least, diversity and Dutch society, with a cameo of Lieuwe Zelle, performing artist and founder of Radio WORM who had the chance to meet Stephanie previously and allowed her to make a film featuring him. This work can be seen as a testimony of the 2023 Rotterdam and a piece of appreciation for the future memoir and archive of the city’s community.

ES | Este proyecto fílmico y musical fue creado y grabado por Stephanie Ascanio G. (cineasta y directora) e Iván Medellín (compositor musical y productor) en varias locaciones de Róterdam, Países Bajos, durante mayo y junio de 2023, y desarrollado y producido en Bogotá, Colombia.

The Clan of the Rotte River está compuesto por cinco cortometrajes que retratan diferentes temas que giran en torno a la ciudad: el ritmo, las formas, el cambio, la gente y por último, pero no menos importante, la diversidad y la sociedad holandesa. El filme tiene una breve intervención de Lieuwe Zelle, artista escénico y fundador de Radio WORM, quien tuvo la oportunidad de conocer a Stephanie anteriormente y le permitió hacer una película con él. Este trabajo puede verse como un testimonio de Róterdam 2023 y una muestra de agradecimiento por las futuras memorias y archivos de la comunidad en la ciudad.

Lucas Silva, 2023 (70')

EN | Benkos Biohó is a mythical character, a Maroon warrior who escaped slavery and founded the Palenque de San Basilio, the first free town in America, on the Caribbean coast of Colombia. In this film, several members of the Palenquera community revisit and relive the story of Benkos Biohó, in a personal and free way. Víctor Cimarra, Palenquero farmer is Benkos with his cimarrón army. Justo Valdés, champeta singer, meets him on the walls of Cartagena. But Victor is also in the present, and survives as best he can in the wild city of Cartagena. The camera films this process of collective creation, where the characters create from Benkos, the center of their cosmogony.

Cine-trance, collective creation to realize a process of mystical thought and historical re-invention. Ethno-fiction, improvisation, experimental theater, docu-fiction, Posesión Suprema is a film that overflows, uncontrollable, mixing categories and breaking codes, where the author is erased to allow the foam and the delirium of collective creation to rise and reach its peak. The film is made by director Lucas Silva, who has been documenting (music) culture on the coasts of Colombia since the 90's and runs the label Palenque Records.

ES | Benkos Biohó es un personaje mítico, un guerrero cimarrón que escapó de la esclavitud y fundó el Palenque de San Basilio, el primer pueblo libre de América, en la costa caribeña de Colombia. En esta película, varios miembros de la comunidad palenquera revisitan y reviven la historia de Benkos Biohó, de manera personal y libre. Víctor Cimarra, campesino palenquero es Benkos con su ejército cimarrón. Justo Valdés, cantante de champeta, lo encuentra en las murallas de Cartagena. Pero Víctor también está en el presente, y sobrevive como puede en la ciudad salvaje de Cartagena. La cámara filma este proceso de creación colectiva, donde los personajes crean a partir de Benkos, el centro de su cosmogonía.

Este cine-trance sucede como una creación colectiva para realizar un proceso de pensamiento místico y de re-invención histórica con etnoficción, improvisación, teatro experimental, docuficción. Posesión Suprema es una película que se desborda, incontrolable, mezcla categorías y rompe códigos. En ella se borra al autor para permitir que el delirio de la creación colectiva suban y alcancen su climax. La película está realizada por el director Lucas Silva, quien documenta la cultura (musical) en la costa colombiana desde los años 90 bajo el sello Palenque Records.

EN | Before the film Posesión Suprema, Juan D. Montoya-Alzate will provide a lecture around picó and champeta culture. The author of the book Caribbean Palimpsests: Music and Heritage in Northern Colombia (2024) will give an introduction to the history of decolonial resistance that picó culture brings with it.

ES | Previo a la proyección de la película Posesión Suprema, Juan D. Montoya-Alzate brindará una conferencia en torno a la cultura del picó y la champeta. El autor del libro Palimpsestos del Caribe: Música y patrimonio en el norte de Colombia (2024) hará una introducción a la historia de resistencia decolonial que trae consigo la cultura del picó.

ES | Influenciado por la escena musical picotera y criado en el ghetto de Soledad Atlántico, Bclip emerge inicialmente como un atípico productor urbano que inconforme con las etiquetas y géneros preestablecidos, decide surfear en un amplio espectro de sonoridades cobijadas en lo que él denomina “LA GRA$A”. Este artista desafia los límites convencionales de la música electrónica, explorando una amplia gama de influencias que van desde la salsa , el reggaetón y el folclor costeño hasta el blackmetal, IDM y el hardhouse, dando como resultado la producción de un amplio espectro musical coherente con sus bases en el crossover latinoamericano. Por su combinacion de generos musicales y su aguda sensibilidad artística Bclip es reconocido como miembro de la vanguardia atemporal de la escena musical latinoamericana.

Bclip encarna la resonancia contracultural del ghetto, que florece en la carencia, la recursividad y el talento empírico, todo ello arraigado en un profundo conocimiento e investigación de las raíces y la historia previa sumado a un sentimiento anti-light que representa la disidencia marginal de vanguardia.

EN | Influenced by the "picó" scene and raised in the ghetto of Soledad Atlántico, Bclip initially emerges as an atypical urban producer dissatisfied with predefined labels and genres. He decides to navigate through a wide spectrum of sounds sheltered under what he calls "LA GRA$A," challenging the conventional boundaries of electronic music. He explores a broad range of influences ranging from salsa, reggaetón, and coastal folklore to black metal, IDM, and hard house. This exploration results in the production of a vast musical spectrum coherent with his foundations in Latin American crossover. Combined with his acute artistic sensibility, this catapults him into recognition as a member of the timeless vanguard of the Latin American music scene.

Bclip embodies the countercultural resonance of the ghetto, flourishing in scarcity, resourcefulness, and empirical talent, all rooted in a profound knowledge and investigation of roots and previous history, coupled with an anti-light sentiment representing the cutting-edge marginal dissent.

EN | Through the footage that Jaison, a former FARC guerrilla, made about daily life and struggles in La Picota (the biggest prison in Colombia), we are introduced to the love story between him and Laura, a trans-woman convicted to more than fifty years in this prison. Through personal accounts and images, Transfariana creates a unique dialogue between the struggle for rights and justice trans-people hold in Colombia with the promises the Peace Agreement with FARC-EP had.

ES | A través de las imágenes que Jaison, exguerrillero de las FARC, realizó sobre la vida cotidiana y las luchas en La Picota (la cárcel más grande de Colombia), nos adentramos en la historia de amor entre él y Laura, una mujer trans condenada a más de cincuenta años en esta prisión. A través de relatos e imágenes personales e íntimas, Transfariana crea un diálogo único entre la lucha por los derechos y la justicia que sostienen las personas trans en Colombia y las promesas del Acuerdo de Paz con las FARC-EP.

Demetrio Aguilera Malta, 1958 (72')

EN | Colombian film directed by Ecuadorian writer and filmmaker Demetrio Aguilera Malta, filmed in Bogotá in 1958. Its discovery in 2014 in the archives of Señal Memoria RTVC, archives of the liquidated Inravisión, allowed preservation processes to be activated after the film was considered missing.

Dos Ángeles y medio is the story of two street children, Chispas and Cosquillas, who find a child from a rich family in the National Park. These children embark on an adventure through the city, walking through streets, neighborhoods and some representative places of Bogotá such as the Hotel Tequendama, the Santa Ana neighborhood and La Candelaria to return the child to his nanny.

ES | Película colombiana dirigida por el escritor y cineasta ecuatoriano Demetrio Aguilera Malta, filmada en Bogotá en el año 1958. Su hallazgo en 2014 en los archivos de Señal Memoria RTVC, archivos de la liquidada Inravisión, permitió activar procesos de preservación después de dar por desaparecida la película.

Dos Ángeles y medio es la historia de dos niños de la calle, Chispas y Cosquillas, que se encuentran a un niño de una familia rica en el Parque Nacional, estos niños emprenden una aventura por la ciudad recorriendo calles, barrios y algunos lugares representativos de Bogotá como el Hotel Tequendama, el barrio Santa Ana y La Candelaria para lograr devolver al pequeño a su niñera.

EN | Nuestra película is a re-visit to those images that have accumulated in events and reproductions. A collage of repetitions and memories built through the intervention of the Colombian news archive of the 80s and 90s, as well as a dizzying journey through the ulterior meaning of those same images that are decomposing and losing meaning.

ES | Nuestra película es una re-visita a esas imágenes que se fueron acumulando en hechos y en reproducciones. Un collage de repeticiones y memorias construido a través de la intervención del archivo noticioso colombiano de los años 80 y 90, y es al mismo tiempo un viaje vertiginoso por el sentido ulterior de esas mismas imágenes que se van descomponiendo y perdiendo sentido.

EN | In search of adventure and fleeing from himself, Álvaro (70) arrived in the United States from Colombia 45 years ago. Instead of escaping his demons, however, New York provided ways to bring him face to face with them, dragging him into a life of raw extremes and uncertainties. Recently separated from Doris, his only true love, Álvaro finds himself alone in his small Harlem apartment and decides to return to Colombia to try to reunite with his estranged family. 'Álvaro' is an intimate portrait that exposes the unhealed wounds of loneliness and uprooting, but also the strength of a man who refused to give up.

ES | Álvaro (70) es un inmigrante que llegó desde Colombia a Estados Unidos hace 45 años, huyendo de sí mismo y en busca de aventuras. Pero Nueva York en vez de alejarlo de su realidad, lo puso frente a ella, arrastrándolo a una cruda vida de incertezas que lo han llevado a vivir situaciones extremas. Hoy desde un pequeño apartamento en Harlem, después de separarse de Doris, su único y conflictivo amor, Álvaro decide regresar a Colombia para tratar de unirse con su familia perdida. Álvaro es un retrato íntimo que deja al descubierto las cicatrices de la soledad y el desarraigo, pero también la fuerza de un hombre que nunca se dejó vencer.

EN | After a long migratory journey of 20 years, the director faces her most difficult time: watching her mother grow old from a long distance and realizing how her mind, with dementia, begins to forget those few moments they shared in Barcelona and Bogotá. Through telephone conversations, memories and the struggle to reunite the family, we enter a terrain in which the feeling of nostalgia permeates everything.

ES | Después de un largo camino migratorio de 20 años, la directora se enfrenta a su época más difícil: ver envejecer a su madre a larga distancia y darse cuenta de cómo su mente, con demencia, empieza a olvidar esos pocos momentos que compartieron en Barcelona y Bogotá. A través de conversaciones telefónicas, de recuerdos y de la lucha por la reagrupación familiar, nos adentramos en un terreno en el que la sensación de nostalgia lo impregna todo.

EN | Since 2021, Cinema Colombiano has its own radio program on Radio WORM. Nowadays you can listen to it every other Wednesday. Aside from guests, DJ's Mitze Apocalipze and Chucho Vinilo have been intensively researching classic and contemporary music in Colombia: knowledge that shows during their surprising DJ-sets. Cumbia psicodelica, dooombia, vintage rock bogotano, champeta power... come and join the closing of this year's festival in a fitting dance frenzy!

ES | Desde 2021, Cinema Colombiano tiene su propio programa de radio en Radio WORM. Hoy en día puedes escucharlo los miércoles cada dos semanas. Además de los invitados, los DJ's Mitze Apocalipze y Chucho Vinilo han estado investigando intensamente la música clásica y contemporánea en Colombia: conocimiento que se muestra durante sus sorprendentes DJ-sets. Cumbia psicodélica, dooombia, vintage rock bogotano, champeta power... ¡ven y únete al cierre del festival de este año en un frenesí de baile apropiado!

EN | Cinema Colombiano returns with the ninth edition of their annual film festival! The program is curated around the theme 'Echando Cabeza', with which you are invited to think about the role of memory and archives in Colombian cinema and music.

ES | Echando cabeza es la novena edición de Cinema Colombiano, en la que queremos invitarles a pensar el rol de la memoria y los archivos en el cine y la música colombiana.

You can expect films that make use of personal or forgotten archives to create alternative stories about the country. Observing the role of nostalgia in the formation of memories and life stories, the program also includes films that speak directly to the diasporas. Furthermore two recently restored films are presented: Dos Ángeles y Medio (1958) and Pepos (1983). These are part of the small but growing number of Colombian works from the last century that manage to have a new life thanks to the hard work of archivists, restorers and cinephiles.

This year, in Rotterdam, WORM will celebrate its 25th anniversary, which means something special is organized: the picó El Mágico Baobab will be placed outside on the street! In between the film blocks different selectors will present part of their record collections in this colorful sound system born between the Colombian Caribbean and the Netherlands. Contributing to this, Juan D. Montoya-Alzate, author of the book Caribbean Palimpsests: Music and Heritage in Northern Colombia (2024), will give us an introduction to the history of decolonial resistance that picó culture brings with it. And to top it off, we will close down in Rotterdam with a club night featuring Bclip, recognized for his exploration of the little-documented Colombian guaracha musical genre.

The festival returns one week later in Filmhuis CAVIA in Amsterdam with a wide-ranging film program around this year's theme featuring multiple guests. Closing the event, DJ's Mitze Apocalypse and Chucho Vinilo will turn the cinema into a lively dance floor.

Tendremos películas que hacen uso de archivos personales u olvidados para crear otras historias sobre el país. Presentaremos dos filmes recientemente restaurados: Dos Ángeles y Medio (1958) y Pepos (1983). Estos hacen parte del pequeño pero creciente número de obras colombianas del siglo pasado que logran tener una nueva vida gracias al trabajo arduo de archivistas, restauradorxs y cinéfilxs. Y veremos películas que nos hablan de manera directa a las diásporas, observando el papel de la nostalgia en la conformación de memorias e historias de vida.

El siete de septiembre en Róterdam celebraremos con el picó El Mágico Baobab el aniversario de WORM en la Boomgaardsstraat. Los bloques de películas se alternarán con diferentes selectors que presentarán parte de sus colecciones sonoras en este sound-system nacido entre el Caribe colombiano y los Países Bajos. EN | More than forty years after the filming of Dos ángeles y medio, we are in Bogotá, in Ciudad Bolívar, a neighborhood that could have been the suburb where Chispas and Cosquillas mistakenly took the rich kid. Today there, Ojo al Sancocho and its Escuela Popular de Cine y Video Comunitario, give the camera to the children so that they can tell us about their adventures.

ES | Tras más de cuarenta años de haber sido filmada Dos ángeles y medio estamos en Bogotá, en Ciudad Bolívar un barrio que pudo ser esa periferia al que Chispas y Cosquillas llevaron por error al niño rico. Hoy ahí, Ojo al Sancocho y su Escuela Popular de Cine y Video Comunitario, le da la cámara a los niñxs para que sean ellxs mismos quienes nos cuenten sus andanzas.

EN | Dorothy's dream was to perform on stage in a skirt and be recognized as the woman she was, but she died before fulfilling it. Her best friend Misael, a 60 year old gay man, will make it happen. In Chocó, the colombian state with the largest afro-descendant population and the highest poverty rates, Misael creates the first queer folk dance group together with four trans women and four gay men, questioning their traditions that are defended by cultural values in order to erase their queerness.

ES | El sueño de Doroty era subirse a un escenario y bailar con una falda pero le llegó la muerte antes de cumplirlo. Misael, su mejor amigo de casi 60 años, lo hará realidad. En el Chocó, departamento colombiano con mayor población afrodescendiente y mayores índices de pobreza, Misael crea el primer grupo queer de danza folclórica junto a un grupo de jóvenes que apadrinó, cuestionando tradiciones culturales que se escudan en la costumbre para excluirles.

Known for her Caribbean flavor, she is a tireless music provider for parties and events through her sessions to the rhythm of salsa, cumbia, dancehall, afrobeat and other hip-breaking Afro-Caribbean rhythms. For La Niña Mai, music is a space of freedom, irreverence and transgression, from which to recover, recreate and strengthen empowering and transformative imaginaries and sounds from a decolonial transfeminist perspective.

La música es para La Niña Mai un espacio de libertad, irreverenica y transgresión, desde el cual recuperar, recrear y fortalecer imaginarios y sonoridades empoderadora y transformadoras desde una mirada transfeminista decolonial.
